Women & Words began in 2003 by a group of women who love to read and whose mission is to present an event where women's words and achievements are honored. Having been so inspired by the many literary events we have attended over the years, we wanted to create our own extraordinary event in the Los Angeles area. In the spirit of offering a “hand up,” Women & Words promotes women authors and inspires others by donating the majority of our profit to women and children’s charitable organizations. Since 2004, Women & Words has raised almost $10,000 for charities such as Children’s Law Center, Penny Lane, Women’s Care Cottage, Westside Children’s Center and Children’s Institute Inc. Additionally, each year ten young women attend Women & Words on a scholarship provided by our generous supporters.

Leading the way is Sheila Irani. In addition to being an avid reader, Sheila also owns a successful, national advertising agency focusing on social issues such as energy conservation, driving safety, recycling and drunk driving awareness. She has spearheaded the Women & Words committee, which includes Roslyn Fanello and Linda Friedman. Roslyn Fanello is a part-time Nurse Practitioner specializing in Gerontology. After attending our first Women & Words event, Roz was hooked, convinced all who would listen to attend, and continues to seek the best authors for our well read and diverse Los Angeles community. Linda Friedman has been a part of Women & Words since our inception as our bookseller and support system tirelessly helping us find great authors.

A note from the Executive Director:

Women & Words is producing our next literary events on Saturday, May 2 and Saturday, October 3, 2009. This year, we are producing a spring and fall event to help bring more authors to our readers, and more desperately needed funds to our community’s charitable beneficiaries. The spring event will benefit Children’s Hospital, Adolescent Medicine division and be held at the Monte Cristo Banquet Hall in Los Feliz. Our fall event will benefit WriteGirl and be held at the Olympic Collection in West Los Angeles. Both events will begin at 10 a.m. and feature at least four authors. To find out more about Women and Words’ beneficiaries, please visit the section titled “Charities We Support,” and our Agenda will tell you more about each event’s schedule.

We have learned that there are more authors we want to feature at Women & Words than there is time in our program. So, our natural conclusion was to add another day to make sure you have the chance to be exposed to even more brilliant authors who inspire us with their stories spoken from their heart with passion and exuberance. So we do hope you’ll take the chance with us and join us at Women & Words twice this year!
If you would like to read about previous year’s authors and see our photo album, please select “Previous Programs.”

If you have any items or services you would like to donate for the silent auction, or if you are interested in volunteering or offering sponsorships for young women who are interested in attending, please contact me at registration@womenandwords.com.

We hope you’ll join us for another fabulous conference. If you have attended Women & Words you know how moving it can be. If you register early and buy a table of 10, you will save money, sit with your friends, and take advantage of prime seating. Early bird registration dates are on the forms, under Registration. We think you’ll agree that this event is well worth the price for the opportunity to hear authors, participate in a Q&A panel, enjoy a delicious breakfast and lunch, purchase books and have them signed by your favorite authors. We do hope you will join us for an incredible day and help support two great causes.

Sincerely,
