Mission
Reach Out and Read prepares America 's youngest children to succeed in school by partnering with doctors to prescribe books and encourage families to read together.

Each child who participates in Reach Out and Read reaches kindergarten with a home library of up to ten children's books.  More importantly, each book given is accompanied by age-appropriate literacy guidance offered by the pediatrician so that parents understand the importance of reading aloud daily.

Since the first children's book was handed to a baby in a Los Angeles county clinic in 1997, Reach Out and Read Los Angeles has grown to partner with 137 clinics including small community health centers, inner city clinics, all 37 Kaiser Permanente self-funded clinics, and large urban teaching hospitals.
In fiscal year 2011 in Los Angeles County, 85,246 new books were given to young children and countless hours of read aloud advice to their parents.
